Sun Tong Luck Asian Cuisine
2500 Bethel Road
Columbus, OH 43220

Hours of Operation:
Tuesday-Sunday 11AM to 10PM

Date visited: Sunday, 7/17/05

Type of eatery: Chinese Eatery

Dish I ordered: Sweet Heart Buns and Crystal Dumplings (both considered appetizers)

What I got: The sweet heart bun is a delicious chinese style lightly sweetened steamed bread bun with a sweet filling. The crystal dumpling is a buckwheat based dough, very thin, steamed and shaped like a crescent and contains pork and shrimp filling.

Price paid: $2.25 for 3, for both orders. I ordered multiple sets.

Sun Tong opened in Reynoldsburg Ohio in 1982. Over the years, it has won many awards and recommendations, and yet remains a bit obscure even to Ohioans. The primary customers are OSU students, and my companion and I are mistaken for OSU students by the (current) owner when we go in. They are very friendly and almost always there.

A little background: The original owner came to the US in 1972 after being the head chef of a well known restaurant in Hong Kong. Even though Dim Sum (which the restaurant is famous for) is a regional dish in China, it's considered authentic Chinese when compared to the majority of food Americans eat at Chinese restaurants all over the country.

Their specialty is Dim Sum, which they make VERY well but I didn't have any this trip. I ordered 20 dollars worth of Sweet Heart Buns, which I shared with my family and have now gotten my mother addicted.

The atmosphere is like that of a take-out Pizza place. There are tables but most people take-out. All the food is prepared fresh and hand-made. It takes 15 minutes if you order anything made of steamed bread. Worth it!

I've honestly never had any of their full dishes. They serve typical "chinese food" as well and at very reasonable prices. All the entrees come in "Lunch", "Half" and "Full" sizes.

In addition to the sweet heart buns, they offer tofu dishes, sui mai, pot stickers and "congee" or porridge.

Simply, food this good is hard to find and for me, it's what I look forward to most when I visit Columbus Ohio. Oh, that and my family ;)

Their slogan is "Fine dining quality with fast food convenience" and they are so right.

Rating: ***** (5 stars)
The best chinese take-out restaurant I've ever been to. Their only problem is there is only one of them! They aren't a chain, so if you want their cooking, you have to go to Columbus.

Would I eat there again: I WILL eat there again. Whenever I visit Columbus Ohio, I visit this restaurant.
