What I got: Cheese nachos - Very good and very much so authentic Mexican! Dessert: Fried ice cream. It's not the traditional "fried ice cream" that I knew of, anyway. It is not ice cream quickly battered in bread crumbs or cornflakes and then quickly fried. It was more of something like a hardened tortilla shaped into a bowl. Then ice cream was placed in it. On top of the ice cream there was a chocolate and cinnamon glaze and on top of that on the ice cream there was whipped cream and then on the very top a cherry. I also had a sopapilla. This was very good as well, though different from what I originally knew, too. It was fried crisp, and not a pocket, but flat like a tortilla (the bowl for the ice cream was quite like the sopapilla shaped into a bowl). On it, there was honey and cinnamon.

Price paid: For these things, two orders and two drinks, it was a little over $20.

El Tapatio is a fairly new restaurant to the Lake Charles. I am not sure when it opened, but we saw it many times and it had no yet opened and it was finally open one time. My mom got some dinner there and then Briana and I went out that night as she wanted to try these three food items.

This food is definitely authentic Mexican. It is a family run place and the family there speaks very little English. In fact, the only person that really does speak English is the youngest daughter who must be about 8 or 9 years of age. However, they are all very nice people and will be glad if you even make an effort to communicate. When Briana and I went, there was a huge gathering of friends there definitely enjoying themselves and we could tell they loved that it was real Mexican food. We could also tell by the ingredients listed in the dishes on the menu.

During the day it can get a little on the warm side if it is summer, but it is not all that bad once it is cooler outside. The design of the place makes one think "Mexican" as well with a lot of darker greens and some whites.

Rating: **** (4 stars)

Would I eat there again: Yes. Anytime I've got time to wait for good Mexican food to be cooked and that's what I want I will eat there!
